Mildred Spence, AKA Ms. Millie, is HALO's one and only Food Service Coordinator. Most of the time, you can find Millie in the HALO Cafe, planning and preparing the wonderful meals our guests enjoy.
"I work very hard... I wouldn't serve anyone something I wouldn't eat myself"
When asked how long she had been cooking, Millie said that she can remember her mother standing her up on a chair pulled up to the counter and teaching her to cook at 6 years old. By the time she was 10, she was making meals for her family while they worked the fields.
Ever since, Millie has loved to cook. Even when she was working 2 or 3 jobs, she would prepare meals for her family; a family that now includes 4 children, 10 grand-children, and 6 great-grand-children! She has also cooked for the American Legion, the VFW, and the Elks Lodge, all of which she is a proud member.
Millie's Work With HALO
Millie started volunteering with HALO as part of a program to find work for retirees. She started in the women's shelter doing intake, which is where our volunteers will check in our guests, make sure they have what they need, and aren't carrying contraband. But this job didn't fit Millie's gifts.
Out of curiosity, she wondered into the cafe one night, and there she has stayed! Even after she was assigned somewhere else by her program, Millie decided to stay. We brought her on as staff in June 2016, and haven't looked back since!
"I just love to cook."
